What is polyaspartic floor coating (or polyurea floor coating?)
Polyurea is a subcategory of polyurethane while polyaspartic is a type of aliphatic polyurea. Polyurea is normally formed as a result of reaction between isocyanates and water or polyetheramines. This forms a urea linkage. Compared to epoxy, polyurea combines resin and a catalyst that causes a curing reaction, which makes the material hard and durable. Polyurea is more flexible than epoxy since it has low to zero VOCs. It also has a 300%+ elongation rate.
It’s mainly used in industrial applications such as interior pipe coating, spray-on bed liners, liquid containment lining, tunnel coatings etc. They cure extremely fast and they take less than 5 minutes to be fully hard. Polyaspartics on the other hand doesn’t cure as quickly as polyurea. Depending on the formulation, polyaspartics have a pot life of between 5 to 120 minutes. To simply understand the two, polyaspartics are in essence polyurea. So In case you see a garage floor coating advert as polyurea, it means it’s a formulation of a polyaspartic coating.
Polyaspartic garage floor coating guide (and benefits)
Now that you’ve learned what polyaspartic and polyurea coatings are, what are the benefits to choosing them? The two major benefits of the two are temperature and time. In this polyurea and polyaspartic floor coating guide, you’ll learn why these two factors matter – and their benefits compared to epoxy coating.
A polyaspartic coating is normally applied in temperatures between -30F and 140F (it depends on the formulation). This means you don’t have to wait for a warmer climate (e.g. summer) to coat your garage floor. They are normally applied in two coats namely; primer/color coat and clear coat. Since they cure fast, the flooring system can be finished in one day, hence you don’t have to wait for 3-4 days like in an epoxy system.
Other benefits of polyurea/polyaspartic floor coatings include:
- Complete U.V stability.
- The finish work is Crystal clear and doesn’t blush from moisture inside the concrete.
- Has high abrasion and high scratch resistance.
- Highly tolerant to heat.
- Has high chemical and stain resistance.
- Doesn’t peel or flake easily.
- It’s easy to clean.
